Book Review Once Upon a Time There Was You by Elizabeth Berg

Once Upon a Time, There Was You             by  Elizabeth Berg

An interesting and easy read.  It was haunting and had some unexpected twists in my opinion.  The characters and situations were believable and intriguing. I always pick up this author's books when I see one that I have not read.

Beginnings

Okay, I have always wanted a program that would inherently assist me in writing "the" story...whatever that may come to be.  I have looked at every office supply and technology store I have ever been in to find THE program that would be a Journal for Beginners.  I have dozens of paper journals squirreled away on bookshelves, in drawers, hiding in backpacks and briefcases in my home.  Many have several entries, some with more scribbling, many, many more as blank and pristine as the day I bought them.  I look at every blank book display in every Half Price book store I go into.  Sometimes I find the perfect cover with blank or lined pages.  It speaks to me as I lovingly caress the leather or hardboard cover.  It leaps into my hand or cart, and I leave knowing that using my Teacher Discount card made the purchase legitimate and this is the one that will make the difference in my writing.

When Laura was young, we would buy the "fill-in-the nouns, adjectives, verbs books" for traveling in the car.  The stories were always different and funny and so easy to complete.  Is that what formula writing is in adult form?  Take a basket of real or imaginary character names, assorted place and thing names, age-appropriate adjectives, action-packed verbs and toss like a green salad.  Add dressing and croutons.  A novel begins.

Is that what I have been searching for in my quest for the program or the blank book that would make it happen?  Or, has that been a diversion to keep me from expending the energy and exerting the effort that it will take to complete a thought in a long form?  I see that I use the present and future helping verb form "will" rather than the past form "would" so I may be on the right track.
